Why I Choose Soy Wax Over Paraffin

Why I Choose Soy Wax Over Paraffin

When choosing a candle, most people are drawn to the fragrance, the look of the jar, or the feeling it brings to a room. But what many people don’t realise is that what a candle is made from matters just as much as how it smells.

When I first began making candles, I spent a lot of time researching the ingredients used in traditional candles. With a background in chemistry, I’ve always been interested in what we bring into our homes and how different ingredients behave when they are heated.

That research led me to one clear conclusion: I didn’t want to use paraffin wax.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is the most common wax used in mass-produced candles. It is inexpensive, easy to work with, and widely available, which is why it is often found in many high street candles.

However, paraffin is a by-product of petroleum. In simple terms, it comes from the same process used to make fuel and other petroleum-based products.

While paraffin candles may smell lovely at first, they can release substances into the air as they burn, especially if they contain synthetic fragrance oils or poor-quality ingredients.

Why I Avoid Paraffin Candles

When paraffin wax burns, it can release small amounts of chemicals such as toluene and benzene. These are substances that many people prefer to avoid in their homes, particularly in spaces where we want to feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable.

For anyone with allergies, asthma, headaches, or sensitivity to strong fragrances, paraffin candles can sometimes feel overpowering or irritating.

Because I wanted to create candles that felt cleaner, gentler, and more natural, I knew there had to be a better option.

Why I Choose Soy Wax

Soy wax is made from soybeans, making it a natural, renewable alternative to paraffin. It is biodegradable, kinder to the environment, and burns much more cleanly.

From the moment I started experimenting with soy wax in my home studio, I loved the difference.

Soy wax creates a softer, more even burn and allows fragrance to fill a room in a subtle, beautiful way rather than feeling too strong. It also has a lovely creamy finish that feels simple, elegant, and timeless.

Most importantly, soy wax supports the kind of candles I want Cera Vía to create: candles that are beautiful, thoughtful, and made with care.

A Cleaner, Longer-Lasting Burn

One of the biggest benefits of soy wax is that it burns more slowly than paraffin. Because the wax burns at a lower temperature, your candle lasts longer, meaning you can enjoy it for many more evenings.

Soy candles also produce far less soot. If you have ever noticed black marks around the rim of a candle jar or smoke staining near a candle, that is often caused by paraffin.

With soy wax and braided cotton wicks, the flame stays cleaner and steadier, creating a more beautiful burn with less smoke and residue.

That means:

  • A longer-lasting candle
  • Less soot and smoke
  • A cleaner fragrance experience
  • A candle that feels kinder to your home and to the environment

Why Cera Vía Uses Only 100% Soy Wax

At Cera Vía, every candle is hand-poured in small batches using 100% soy wax, high-quality fragrance blends, and braided cotton wicks.

I choose soy because it reflects everything I want this business to stand for: quality, simplicity, and care.

I believe candles should add something beautiful to your home without filling it with unnecessary chemicals or harsh ingredients. They should feel luxurious, comforting, and safe to enjoy every day.

For me, creating candles is not only about fragrance. It is about creating an experience—one that feels calm, clean, and connected to the small rituals that make a house feel like home.

So while soy wax candles may cost a little more than mass-produced paraffin ones, they are made to last longer, burn better, and bring something truly special into your space.

And that is why I will always choose soy wax.
