The Science of Scent: How Fragrance Affects Mood

The Science of Scent: How Fragrance Affects Mood

There is something almost magical about scent.

A single fragrance can transport you instantly: to a childhood memory, a favourite holiday, a cosy winter evening, or a walk by the sea. Before we even realise it, scent has the power to shift our mood, change the atmosphere of a room, and make us feel calmer, happier, more energised, or comforted.

With a background in chemistry, I’ve always been fascinated by the science behind fragrance and why certain scents make us feel the way they do. Candle making is not only about creating something beautiful—it is also about understanding how different fragrance notes work together and how they can influence the way we feel.

Why Scent Feels So Powerful

Out of all our senses, smell is the one most closely connected to memory and emotion.

When we smell something, scent molecules travel through the nose to a part of the brain called the limbic system. This is the area responsible for memory, emotions, and mood.

That is why certain fragrances can instantly remind us of someone we love, a particular place, or a moment in time.

The smell of fresh linen might bring back memories of home. Sea salt and citrus can remind us of summer holidays by the coast. Cinnamon, orange, and clove often make us think of Christmas, cosy evenings, and family gatherings.

Unlike other senses, fragrance creates an emotional response almost immediately. That is what makes candles so special—they do more than simply scent a room. They create a feeling.

Relaxing Scents for Evenings

In the evenings, many of us want our homes to feel calm, soft, and restful.

Certain fragrance notes are known for their relaxing qualities. Lavender is one of the best-known calming scents and is often used to help people unwind before bed. Chamomile, vanilla, sandalwood, and soft florals also create a sense of warmth and peace.

These fragrances work beautifully in bedrooms, living rooms, or during a quiet bath at the end of the day.

Some of my favourite evening combinations include:

  • Lavender and cedarwood
  • Vanilla and sandalwood
  • Jasmine and amber
  • Chamomile with a hint of soft citrus

These scents feel comforting without being overpowering, helping to create a peaceful atmosphere for slow evenings and cosy nights at home.

Fresh Scents for Mornings

Morning fragrances are often very different. At the start of the day, we usually want scents that feel bright, clean, and uplifting.

Citrus oils such as lemon, grapefruit, bergamot, and orange are often linked with energy and positivity. Fresh notes like eucalyptus, mint, sea salt, and green leaves can make a space feel crisp and refreshed.

These are the fragrances I love in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms, or anywhere you want your home to feel light and full of life.

Some of my favourite fresh combinations are:

  • Sea salt and citrus
  • Grapefruit and mint
  • Lemon with rosemary
  • Bergamot and eucalyptus

Inspired by the Dorset coast, I especially love fresh marine notes blended with soft citrus. They capture that feeling of opening the window to cool sea air on a bright morning.

Why We Love Seasonal Scents

Our fragrance preferences often change with the seasons, and there is a reason for that.

In spring and summer, we naturally gravitate towards lighter, fresher scents. Floral notes, blossom, fresh herbs, and coastal fragrances feel right when the days are brighter and the air is warmer.

As the weather becomes cooler, we begin to crave richer and warmer fragrances. Autumn often brings us back to notes like cinnamon, clove, apple, pumpkin, woods, and spice. In winter, we love deeper, comforting scents such as orange, vanilla, pine, amber, and smoky woods.

Seasonal scents feel nostalgic because they connect us to familiar rituals and memories.

The scent of pine may remind us of decorating a Christmas tree. Fresh flowers can bring back memories of spring gardens. A spiced candle on a dark autumn evening creates an instant sense of comfort and home.

This is one of the things I love most when creating new collections for Cera Vía. I take inspiration from the seasons here in Dorset—the sea air in summer, blooming gardens in spring, crisp woodland walks in autumn, and cosy winter evenings by candlelight.

My Favourite Fragrance Combinations

When I create a new candle, I love blending different notes together to create something balanced and memorable.

I’m drawn to fragrances that feel elegant, natural, and easy to live with every day—scents that fill a room gently rather than overpowering it.

Some of my favourite combinations are:

  • Sea salt, driftwood, and citrus for a fresh coastal feel
  • Lavender, vanilla, and cedarwood for calm evenings
  • Fig and jasmine for something soft and sophisticated
  • Orange, cinnamon, and clove for autumn and winter
  • Peony, rose, and soft musk for spring

Each combination tells a story and creates a different mood. Some make us feel grounded and calm, others fresh and energised, and some bring back treasured memories.

That is the beauty of scent.

It is invisible, but it changes everything.

At Cera Vía, every candle is created with this in mind: not just how a fragrance smells, but how it makes you feel.
