How to Care for Your Candle So It Lasts Longer

There’s nothing better than lighting your favourite candle and filling your home with a beautiful fragrance. But if you want to enjoy every last burn, candle care matters. A few simple habits can help your candle burn more evenly, last longer, and stay looking beautiful.
Whether you’ve just unwrapped a new candle or you’re halfway through your favourite scent, here’s how to care for your candle so you get the most from it.
1. Always Burn on a Safe, Stable Surface
Before lighting your candle, place it on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface. This helps prevent uneven burning and protects your furniture from heat damage.
Keep your candle away from anything flammable, including curtains, books, paper, dried flowers, and soft furnishings. Drafts from windows, fans, or air conditioning can also affect the flame, causing the candle to burn faster and unevenly.
Top tip: A calm, draft-free space helps your candle burn more cleanly and evenly.
2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
One of the easiest ways to make your candle last longer is to trim the wick before each use.
Your wick should be around 6mm long. If it becomes too long, the flame can grow too large, creating soot, smoke, and an uneven burn. A trimmed wick gives you a smaller, cleaner flame that melts the wax more slowly and evenly.
You can use a wick trimmer, scissors, or nail clippers to carefully trim the wick before lighting.
Why Wick Trimming Matters
- Helps your candle burn more slowly
- Prevents black smoke and soot marks
- Keeps the wax looking clean
- Reduces the risk of the flame becoming too high
3. Don’t Burn Your Candle for Too Long
It can be tempting to leave a candle burning all evening, but longer isn’t always better.
Try not to burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Burning for too long can cause the wick to become unstable, the jar to overheat, and the fragrance to weaken.
After 4 hours, extinguish the flame and allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.
Giving your candle a break helps protect the wax and ensures a safer, cleaner burn every time.
4. Let the Wax Melt All the Way to the Edge
The first few burns are especially important.
Each time you light your candle, allow the melted wax to reach the edges of the container before blowing it out. This helps prevent a problem called “tunnelling”, where the candle burns straight down the centre and leaves unused wax around the sides.
When tunnelling happens, your candle won’t burn properly and you’ll lose hours of burn time.
For most candles, this means allowing it to burn for around 2–3 hours, depending on the size of the candle.
Signs Your Candle Is Burning Correctly
- The melted wax reaches the edge of the jar
- The flame is steady and not flickering too much
- The wax pool looks even across the top
5. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
Candles should never be left burning when you leave the room or go to sleep.
Always extinguish your candle fully before walking away. The safest way to do this is with a candle snuffer, but gently blowing it out works too.
Make sure the wick is no longer glowing and allow the candle to cool before moving it.
6. Keep Candles Away from Children and Pets
A lit candle should always be placed well out of reach of children and pets.
Curious hands, wagging tails, and playful paws can easily knock over a candle. Place candles on high, secure surfaces where they cannot be accidentally touched.
Safety always comes first, no matter how lovely your candle smells.
Bonus Tips to Make Your Candle Last Even Longer
If you really want to get every last burn from your candle, try these extra tips:
- Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Put the lid back on when your candle is not in use to protect the fragrance.
- Keep the wax free from dust, wick trimmings, and matches.
- Stop using your candle when around 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.
Final Thoughts
Taking care of your candle doesn’t take much time, but it makes a big difference. By trimming the wick, avoiding long burns, and allowing the wax to melt evenly, you’ll enjoy a cleaner burn, a stronger scent, and more hours from every candle.
A well-cared-for candle is a candle that lasts.
